Career Opportunity: Pre School Teacher Librarian

School Description:

Mission Hills International School is planned as a co-educational, bi-lingual (English and Mandarin) through-train day school for students in Kindergarten (age 3) to University entrance. The campus will be purpose-built for Mission Hills and international school specifications, located immediately adjacent to the Mission Hills resort in Shenzhen, China. By car, it is only 30 minutes from Shenzhen City Center, and 1.5 hours from Hong Kong.

The Pre-Schoolwill open in September 2015 in a newly built, spacious and well-equipped stand-alone facility. In September 2017 we will open Phase 2, the new Lower and Upper Schools with state-of-the-art facilities.

Curriculum in the Pre-School and Lower School will be internally designed with significant strands derived from the Ministry of Education in Ontario (Canada), Chinese Primary School curriculum and other best practice international frameworks. Much of the pedagogical approach will be based on the IB PYP programme. Upon entry into the Upper School, it is our expectation that all MHIS students will be fully enrolled in the IB MYP and DP programmes.

Position Overview:

With recognition that the Faculty and students at Mission Hills International School are the school ' s most valuable resource, we are seeking to appoint an exemplary TeacherLibrarian to work as part of our Pre School team. The Pre School Teacher Librarian is responsible for the organization, development and promotion of the Library to ensure that effective resource and information services are provided and that a love of reading is encouraged within the Pre School. In addition, the Pre School Teacher Librarian is responsible for the smooth running and operation of the library in terms of duties such as circulation service, cataloguing books, reference service for teachers, acquisition and material receipt, and other clerical duties as required. The successful candidate is expected to support the school ' s Mission and Vision and will possess personal and professional qualities that lend themselves to excellence in teaching andLibrary management.

Major Duties:

Cooperative Teaching and Planning:

  • Attendcollaborative planning meetings as needed.
  • Provide ideas and resources for teachers in the development of inquiry units.
  • Plan relevant library and classroom displays to support the inquiry units and literature choices.
  • Teach lessons that support the inquiry units and develop information literacy skills in students (i.e. assist students with access to information by applying knowledge of the organization of libraries, print materials, digital materials, signs, and labels).
  • Assist students with the need to practice responsible use and care of all learning resources.
  • Workcooperatively with students and provide support toward completion of tasks during library time.
  • Nurture a love of reading in students.
  • Assist library patrons (teachers, students and parents) with enquiries.
  • Organize training of parent and other volunteers.

Collection Development, Organization and Procurement:

  • In consultation with teachers and the Associate Principal, assume responsibility for collection development, including the selection and ordering of books.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining the library budget.
  • Ensure that the library collection reflects different cultures and languages to meet the needs of a dual language (English and Chinese) international school.
  • Circulate library resources from loans to returns.
  • Sort and reshelf returned resources according to the relevant indexing system.
  • Catalogue and provide data entry for all resources (English and Chinese collections) according to cataloguing procedures.
  • Generate overdue notices as necessary.
  • Ensure that a proportion of the Library collection is devoted to books and periodicals for the professional support and education of the Pre School staff.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Associate Principal or Head of School.

Working Hours:

  • Open the Library by 8:00 am each morning;
  • Apart from lunch break and other breaks or assignmentsas determined by the Pre School Principal, remain in the Library until 4:45 PM when no staff meetings, staff professional development activities or school events are scheduled;

Required and Preferred Qualifications and Experiences:

  • University degree (BA/B. Sc.) or equivalent (required)
  • Teacher Qualifications (B. Ed/M. Ed/PGCE) or equivalent (required)
  • Teacher Librarian Specialist Certificate or Library Technicians Certificate or equivalent(required)
  • Good organization and communication skills (oral and written) in English and Chinese (required)
  • A positive, caring, collaborative team-player with a passion for early childhood education (required)
